Coppo Wine Cellars in the Piemonte Region of Italy
Our World Wine Travel writers have an extra opportunity to explore, thanks to samples provided by Coppo Wine Cellars. Join us on October 26 as we post our impressions about Coppo Wine Cellars, the Canelli region and the Nizza DOCG. Take a look further down in this introduction for a list of titles to be published this week.
Coppo Wine Cellars, a Historic Winery
Located in Canelli, Coppo Wine Cellars has been continuously producing wine since 1892. The calcareous tufa rock underlying Canelli supported digging of cellars, with over 5 thousand square meters of cellars, renamed the Underground Cathedrals. Thanks to recent renovations, the cellars can be toured during a visit to Coppo!
They produce a wide range of Piemontese wines from the familiar to the lesser known. Their flagship wines highlight Barbera, Metodo Classico sparkling wines, Chardonnay and their Moncalvina Moscato, which features the new Canelli DOCG. They are especially proud of their Pomorosso Nizza Barbera DOCG. Many of our writers received a Pomorosso wine, so expect to see more on October 26!

Coppo Wine Cellars Gavi DOCG “Tenuta La Rocca” 2023 ($19 SRP, sample) 13.5% abv
Gavi wines feature the Cortese grape, a white grape with refreshing acidity and medium body only grown in Northern Italy.
Eye: Medium lemon
Nose: Medium plus aromas of lemon blossom, lemon, tarragon,
Mouth: Dry, medium plus acidity, medium plus body with a rich texture, medium plus flavor intensity, medium alcohol, medium plus finish. Flavors match the nose with the addition of a pleasant almond skin bitterness in the finish.
Observations: A very nice combination of aromatic interest with a nice, rich body. This wine has the intensity to go beyond just an apéritif, into dinner. We enjoyed the Coppo Gavi with a light dinner of citron ravioli in chicken broth, with a pesto accent.
