Orange wine isn’t just a passing fad; it’s become a go-to for anyone who loves wines with character and history. Plus, let’s be honest—those eye-catching, colorful labels are hard to resist!
Working in a wine shop, I’ve noticed that it’s especially the younger wine drinkers who are gravitating toward orange wines, drawn to the unique flavors, as well as to the stories behind each bottle.
Orange wine is made by fermenting white grapes with their skins—just like red wine. This ancient technique gives the wine its signature amber color, extra texture, and bold flavors. Because of its complexity, orange wine pairs beautifully with so many foods, making it a fantastic choice for your next meal. But don’t let the sometimes cloudy look of these wines throw you off. Many orange wines are unfined and unfiltered, which means all those amazing flavors stay intact.
I’ve been enjoying orange wines for almost ten years and recently discovered a new one: Tinto Amorio Bheeyo, a natural wine producer in Healdsburg, California. It’s a blend of organically certified French Colombard, Gewürztraminer, Zinfandel, and Albariño—a mix that brings both floral and fruity notes.
I first tasted it at Kanyakumari, a popular Indian restaurant in Manhattan’s Flatiron district, where it is served by the glass. It was the perfect match to the flavorful, spicy dishes. The wine’s lower alcohol level (10.5%) meant I could sip it all evening and feel great the next day—a major plus in my book!
And the back label? It’s as fun-loving as the wine, stating, “24-day Skin-Contact wine fermented with feverish intentions. This vino has body and is designed for the free-spirited.” No wonder I like it! It’s playful, unapologetic, and perfectly reflects the wine’s character. And I like to think it was designed for free spirits like me!
If you’re looking to dive deeper into the world of orange wine, this bottle, at around $27, is a fantastic place to start. You can find the wine here.
