Aluminium Bahrain BSC (Alba), one of the world’s largest aluminium smelters, recognises the significant role it plays in shaping the environmental and social landscape. Committed to responsible and sustainable business practices, Alba has implemented a comprehensive Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) roadmap, strengthening its alignment with Bahrain’s ambitious goals and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Launched in April 2022, this roadmap outlines six strategic pillars guiding Alba’s journey towards a sustainable future: Decarbonisation, Green Energy & Aluminium, Circular Economy & Secondary Aluminium, Employee Welfare, Collaboration & Partnerships, and Transparency, Communications & Due Diligence.
Decarbonisation: Charting a course towards cleaner energy: The expansion of Power Station 5 (PS5) with Block 4 not only increases capacity but also reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity by 0.5 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of aluminium produced. The plant’s ability to utilise a hydrogen and natural gas mix positions Alba as a leader in sustainable power generation. Complementing this initiative, Alba actively contributes to Bahrain’s goal of doubling tree cover by 2035. Since 2021, over 21,000 trees have been planted across the country through collaborations with various organisations.
Green Energy & aluminium: Embracing renewable solutions: In collaboration with the Sustainable Energy Authority (SEA) of Bahrain, a Solar Farm Project utilising over 11,300 solar panels and boasting a capacity of more than 6 Megawatts is underway. This initiative is projected to significantly reduce carbon emissions over its lifespan. Alba’s spirit extends to its electric vehicle (EV) fleet—three new solar-powered personnel carriers contribute to daily fuel savings while minimising environmental impact.
Circular economy & secondary aluminium: Transforming waste into value: Alba sets the benchmark in waste management with its first-of-its-kind US$37.5 million Spent Pot Lining (SPL) Treatment Plant. This facility employs a zero-waste process, transforming SPL material into valuable products for other industries such as cement. Another noteworthy initiative is the Food Waster Composter, which is capable of processing 125 kg of organic waste daily. This composter produces nutrient-rich fertiliser within 24 hours, contributing to improved soil fertility within Alba’s green areas.
Employee welfare: Investing in our people, our strength: As one of the largest national employers in Bahrain, Alba boasts a workforce comprised of 86% Bahraini nationals. Alba’s investment in training and development programs emphasises this dedication to supporting and developing Bahrain’s human capital. These programs empower employees at all levels with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in their roles and contribute to Alba’s continued success.
Collaboration & partnerships: Building a sustainable future together: Alba contributes to groundbreaking sustainability initiatives through partnerships with leading organisations across the public and private sectors. These collaborations include a pilot project on Carbon Capture with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries EMEA, exploring the use of surplus hydrogen with Bahrain Petroleum Company, and working with the Ministry of Oil and Environment on Mangrove Conservation. These are just a few examples of Alba’s commitment to building a sustainable future for all.
Transparency, communications & due diligence: Building Trust Through Open Communication: Since 2016, Alba has been a leader in ESG reporting – one of the first companies in the Middle East to publish annual Sustainability Reports. These reports detail Alba’s ESG performance and best practices.
